Sock monkeys are stuffed-animal crafts that are hand-sewn and crafted from brown socks with red heels. Traced to the Nelson Knitting Company in Rockford, IL., the characteristic red-heeled socks first appeared in the 1930s during the Great Depression, and were favorite childhood toys and stuffed cuddlies. The socks are still knitted by Fox River Mills in Iowa and can still be sewn into iconclastic monkeys. Sock Monkeys have made a resurgence in recent years through make-it-yourself kits at nature and crafts stores and online sites that sell kits, accessories and custom-made monkeys.
