Ivory Soap Advertising History

Guide Collapse this Section
Ivory Soap -- "the soap that floats" -- got its humble start when a still unnamed Procter & Gamble factory foreman accidentally left the soap mixture churning for too long in the vat in 1879, adding bubbles to a batch that made the resulting bars of soap mysteriously float to the surface. Over the years, Ivory has been uniquely marketed, from lush artistic ads to the "99 44/100% pure" slogan. Herewith, a Guide to Ivory soap and the ads that make it famous.

Unlikely Radio Announcers: Ralph Edwards Started as a Pitchman for P&G, Ivory Soap
http://www.old-time.com/commercials/OTR/Unlikely%20Announcers.htm
Before he created and hosted TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES for Procter & Gamble products (Ivory Soap and later Duz), Ralph Edwards was selling Procter & Gamble products on the radio as an announcer. He was heard during the late 1930s and early 1940s as the announcer of daytime serials sponsored by Ivory Soap, Ivory Flakes, and Crisco--- Procter & Gambles most popular products.

During the late 1930s Edwards was selling Crisco on VIC & SADE, daytime radios most unique serial program. Instead of melodrama radio soaps were famous for, VIC & SADE provided humor that gave the listeners something to smile about when each episode was done.

But ... where are those famous "ugly baby" ads from back in the late 1800's (before they found the Gerber baby illustrator)? We'll see those in the morning. The babies looked like old men.

Anyone know anything about Jack Kelly--of TV's "Maverick"--being an Ivory soap baby when he was only 2 weeks old? If you have information, I'd love to hear from you ... I'm writing Kelly's biography & trying to track down the details on this. Thx.
