Memorial Day

Originally called "Decoration Day" and instituted to honor those who served during the American Civil War, Memorial Day is now a national holiday - observed on the last Sunday in May - to honor all who have served and died while in service in the U.S. military. It was expanded after World War II to encompass all those who serve in the military. For many, it also marks the unofficial start of the summer season in the U.S.
