Timothy Geithner

Guide Collapse this Section
Timothy Geithner is the U.S. Treasury secretary under President Barack Obama. He was previously president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Geithner has been dodging controversy in the early days of the administration, bringing calls for his resignation. Tax problems threatened to derail his confirmation to the Treasury post. His introduction of the federal government's bailout plan for banks was decried for being short on details. But the stock market has been on the rise since details were announced, and Geithner's visibility has increased.

After a disastrous first attempt Feb. 10, 2009, to explain the plan Geithner spelled out more clearly March 23, 2009, how he'll use $75 billion to $100 billion in taxpayer money to leverage the purchases of up to $1 trillion in securities and loans held by banks that are eroding confidence in the financial system.
