Guide Collapse this Section
Stonehenge is an ancient collection of raised stones that seem to defy both time and nature. It was constructed in neolithic times over four thousand years ago. Its amazing gravity-defying stones have awed mankind for millenia.

Stages of Development

Collapse this Section
Stonehenge did not always look as it does today. It developed in three very unique stages over the course of more than a thousand years.
Phase 1

Phase 1

Around 2750 B.C., a circular ditch was dug. This exposed the white chalk which contrasted nicely with the green pasture land. The rubble was piled into a circular mound, and 56 holes, known as the Aubrey holes, were dug and then filled. The significance of these holes is unknown, but they may have held wooden posts.
Phase 2

Phase 2

Phase 2 was erected in about 2000 B.C. A two mile long avenue was built to link Stonehenge with the Hampshire Avon. A double circle of bluestones was set up inside the circular enclosure. At this time, it is believed that a series of wooden structures were set up inside the circular enclosure. Because all evidence of these structures other than a few stake holes has vanished through the years, it is difficult to elaborate any further on their design or purpose.
Phase 3-A

Phase 3-A

This phase was began around 1900 B.C. Bluestones were arranged in a horseshoe shape and the altar stone was placed. This was a very brief stage of the Stonehenge saga.
Phase 3-B

Phase 3-B

In this stage, the bluestones were removed to make room for the Sarsen stones and the Trilithons. These massive megaliths were found near Avenbury 20 miles away. They were gigantic sandstone boulders that must have taken thousands of men to drag, pound into shape with similar rocks, and then most impressively raise and top with a fitting lintel.
Phase 3-C

Phase 3-C

In the final stage of construction, the bluestones were brought back in and placed in a circle between the ring of sarsen stones and the trilithons.

Perhaps the most common question regarding the Stonehenge phenomenon is: How did these neolithic farmers manage to accomplish such a staggering archeological achievement? There are many theories proposed as to how this was done.
