Tsunami

Guide Collapse this Section
A tsunami is a series of waves created when a body of water, such as an ocean, is rapidly displaced. Earthquakes, mass movements above or below water, some volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions all have the potential to generate a tsunami. Due to the immense volumes of water and energy involved, the effects of tsunami can be devastating.

There is no tsunami season. An earthquake or landslide anywhere in the Pacific can generate tsunami waves that can travel across the ocean at more than 500 miles per hour. In Hawai'i, we also can experience locally generated tsunami, especially from the direct results and side effects of our active volcanoes.

Tsunami Geology - What Causes a Tsunami?
http://geology.com/articles/tsunami-geology.shtml
What causes a tsunami?... A tsunami is a large ocean wave that is caused by sudden motion on the ocean floor. This sudden motion could be an earthquake, a powerful volcanic eruption, or an underwater landslide. The impact of a large meteorite could also cause a tsunami. Tsunamis travel across the open ocean at great speeds and build into large deadly waves in the shallow water of a shoreline.
TSUNAMI CAUSES
http://www.important.ca/tsunami_causes.html
A tsunami can be generated by any disturbance that displaces a large mass of water, such as an earthquake, landslide or meteor impact.
What Causes Tsunamis?
http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/tsunami2.htm
Tsunamis, also called seismic sea waves or, incorrectly, tidal waves, generally are caused by earthquakes, less commonly by submarine landslides, infrequently by submarine volcanic eruptions and very rarely by a large meteorite impact in the ocean. Submarine volcanic eruptions have the potential to produce truly awesome tsunami waves. The Great Krakatau Volcanic Eruption of 1883 generated giant waves reaching heights of 125 feet above sea-level, killing thousands of people and wiping out numerous coastal villages.

http://library.thinkquest.org/10136/tsunami/tsuntq.htm
A tsunami is often misnamed a tidal wave, but in fact a tsunami is not just one wave but usually a series of seven or eight, that have nothing to do with the tide. In the open ocean, tsunamis are only about one metre high, but as they approach shallower waters and the shore, they grow to heights as high as eighty-five meters.
http://www.ringsurf.com/online/2411-what_causes_a_tsunami_.html
Tsunamis are a series of extremely long waves that are created after a large volume of water is displaced.  But what is a large volume?  And how is it displaced?

tsunami Damage in Indonesia
http://space.about.com/library/weekly/blindonesiatsunami.htm
On December 26, 2004, a tsunami swept across the Indian ocean, spawned by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. Indonesia suffered many tsunami casualties, part of the total death toll of over 155,000.

http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/tsunami/srilanka05/
On December 26, 2004 the deadliest tsunami in the history of the world hit Sri Lanka, triggered by a massive earthquake of moment magnitude 9.0--the largest earthquake recorded worldwide in 40 years. (See also, the USGS Web Site on the earthquake; and Tsunami Generation from the Sumatra Earthquake.) The tsunami was observed worldwide.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/12/27/un.tsunami/
The tsunamis were "not the biggest in recorded history, but the effects may be the biggest ever because many more people live in exposed areas than ever before," said Jan Egeland, undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief.

Tsunami Damage

Tsunamis are capable of causing a substantial amount of damage. One tsunami can destroy an entire coastal village and remove all the sand from a beach and sand that took hundreds of years to accumulate. Below are examples of the destructive power of tsunamis:

From one perspective, morality is about the value we attach to every single human life. That value has little to do with life itself, void of humanity, of the human mind. Many people, myself among them, leave instructions to their families that will allow them to die rather than be kept alive but unwitting. The moral value of every life derives from its treasure of accumulated experiences...

As the grisly details emerged in the wake of Southeast Asia's EARTHQUAKE and TSUNAMI, the world pulled together as never before. Within days, Western governments rounded up the largest FOREIGN AID package ever assembled - a US$5-billion effort aimed at rebuilding the parts of coastal Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and India hardest hit by the rogue waves.

 Tsunami Memorial
http://www.trekearth.com/themes.php?thid=2216
This theme permits TE members to share photos from the countries that have been devastated by the recent natural disaster, as well as images inspired by this tragic event. The unbelievable magnitude of this event is at first overwhelming. But it evokes personal feelings that deserve attention as well. We each have our own relationship with loss. Sharing our pain is an important precedent to moving on with our lives. This is a group theme, open to all who wish to make a contribution.

http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=409
Selected from 379 entries from 43 countries, NagaConcepts, in collaboration with Spanish architectural firm Disc-O architecture have won the competition to design the Royal Thai Governments Tsunami Memorial in Khao Lak Lamru National Park, in Thailand. The competition was held to create a place to marvel at the spirit and dedication of people, who have fought for their lives, and the lives of others, during and in the aftermath of the Tsunami. The memorial allows visitors to commemorate and also educate them about the cause and effect of a Tsunami, It includes areas of contemplation, a museum, library, a learning centre, amphitheatre, lecture halls and conference rooms and restaurants. Due to the location being in the national park, sensitivity to nature was a key requirement.
